Bill to eliminate BPA from beverage packaging introduced

STONEHAM, MA — US Rep. Edward Markey, D-MA, has filed a bill in Congress that would ban the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in all food and drink packaging, according to a June 25 report in The Stoneham Sun.


BPA is a chemical ingredient in the manufacture of polycarbonate water bottles. There is controversy in the scientific community regarding the use of BPA in food and beverage packaging.


Markey, who represents the 7th District of Massachusetts, filed HR 6228 on June 10. According to the report, he said that with so many people having health concerns regarding BPA, it’s “reached the point that there needs to be an alternative.”


According to Markey’s press secretary, Jessica Schafer, Markey became aware of the chemical through news alerts concerning studies of BPA.


Schafer said in the report that Markey feels strongly that “people have a trust in the marketplace and that families and children should be as safe as possible. These issues are close to his heart.”


HR 6228, also called the Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2008, was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce.
